Dr. Amanda Levinson

Dr. Amanda Levinson is a licensed clinical psychologist and clinical assistant professor at Stony Brook University. Dr. Levinson's research examines predictors of mental health and functioning during important developmental periods of life. In particular, her current work focuses on women in the peripartum (pregnancy through the first year after childbirth). She is interested in understanding neurobiological predictors of anxiety, depression, and parenting behavior (a key predictor of both parent and child well-being). She received her BA in Psychology from Haverford College where she first began using EEG to study neural correlates of mood symptoms. She went on to receive her MA and PhD in Clinical Psychology from Stony Brook University. Currently, her work is supported by the Long Island Network of Clinical and Translational Science (LINCATS).

Lab mission

The ultimate goal of our research is to support parents through the complex, joyful, and stressful parenting journey and to help both parents and children thrive.

Our role in this effort is to use modern neuroscience techniques to understand how the human brain changes and adapts to parenting, and how these biological changes can both help and hurt parents as they work to meet the demands of raising a child.
